About Us

The Most Sustainable is a brand from PT. Gunung Hijau Masarang, a pioneering company championing a revolutionary approach to food production. We proudly hold the title of the first company in the world to harness geothermal energy in crafting our agroforestry products, with a primary focus on our organic arenga sugar (gula aren organik).

In an industry often marred by the high-intensity use of agrochemicals in monoculture farming and reliance on fossil fuels for production, we proudly stand as advocates for a more sustainable alternative. Our unique approach involves a harmonious marriage of agroforestry and renewable energy – a dynamic duo not just meeting the needs of people but also fostering a profoundly positive impact on the environment. By intricately weaving together these two pillars, we aim for a dual-purpose solution, delivering not only superior goods but also actively addressing pressing environmental concerns.

ARENGA PINNATA

Step into the extraordinary world of Arenga Pinnata, the tree at the heart of our flagship product – organic arenga sugar (gula aren organik). This remarkable specimen goes beyond being a mere tree; it's a wellspring of versatility, providing resources for everything from fiber, roof material, brush, rope, vinegar to delectable kolang kaling.

Our journey begins when this majestic tree matures and generously yields a sugary elixir. Through a meticulous process involving gentle incisions on its flower stems, we harvest this precious juice, leaving the tree untouched and unharmed. This juice, the essence of our sustainable Arenga sugar (gula aren), encapsulates the pure essence of nature's bounty.

OUR ARENGA SUGAR

Subtle sweetness. Caramel. Umami. Robust. Full body. These are the different nuances in taste that our sugar has — an upgrade from your regular joe white sugar.

#1 TASTY

So sugar’s been getting a bad rep recently, but not all sugar is created equal! Compared to white sugar, ours is low GI (48-52), making it diabetic-friendly.

In addition the sugar has: 50x more minerals than white sugar, 3x more potassium than bananas and is nutrient rich: contains calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, sodium, copper, vitamin C and B12

#2 HEALTH (IER)

#3 BEYOND ORGANIC (WE’RE FOREST GRADE!)

Our sugar is organic-certified, but we challenge ourselves to go beyond this. “Forest Grade” is a niche within the organic category, products that are derived from a superior forest system.

Organic systems can still be inefficient, as it mines soil nutrients, utilize significant land space and are labor-intensive. Instead, our forest system self-nourishes, requires minimum maintenance, efficiently utilizes land space, and enriches the soil as it grows.

THE MOST SUSTAINABLE?

Because we are. here’s why:

The sugar juice of the Arenga palm, the palm sugar’s main ingredient, is sustainably harvested from biodiverse forests without damaging it. This process is almost universal for all palm sugar producers. But what differentiates our sugar is the utilization of geothermal heat to save firewood, and therefore the forests which it is harvested from.

Reason #1

FORESTS AS FARMS

Long before farming, people got all their food from forests; fruits, nuts, berries, vegetables, tubers - you name it. Unlike conventional farms, forests don’t only grow one type of plant, but rather a conglomeration of species that work together in enriching its environment.

In these polyculture forests, there are trees that fix nitrogen for fertilizer, accumulate minerals, regulate the microclimate and control pests within the forest. They suck carbon out of the atmosphere and store it within the trees and soil, helps recharge aquifers, so that people have clean drinking water.

The forest does not employ a gardener to maintain itself, yet it produces an abundance in positive externalities: clean air, clean water, soil retention, biodiversity, and more!

Reason #2

FUEL FROM GEOTHERMAL

The traditional process of cooking sugar involves the use of firewood, with 10-20 kgs needed to produce 1 kg of sugar, contributing significantly to deforestation.

Geothermal energy, harnessing hot steam from the Earth to generate electricity, presents a clean alternative. Recognizing the opportunity, we noted that forests were being cleared for firewood to cook sugar, while geothermal energy could efficiently be employed for the same purpose.

Reason #3

FARMERS LIVE LONG & PROSPER

By working with the factory, the farmers double their income, whilst halving their working hours; focusing on tapping trees and not making sugar allows them to collect more juice to sell for the factory at a good price. Juice collection consumes significantly less time than cooking, 7 hours as opposed to 12.

The absence of cooking sugar reduces the farmer’s exposure to smog from burning firewood, thus improving their health. These benefits incentivizes them to be good stewards of the forests, safeguarding an asset which provides for their livelihoods.
